As educational institutions transition from traditional time-based models to competency-driven frameworks, there is limited understanding of how to best integrate game elements to support Competency-Based Education (CBE) and sustain motivation and engagement in a self-paced, proficiency-oriented learning environment. A systematic review of 54 peer reviewed articles/scholarly sources was completed identifying patterns in gamification implementation, theoretical frameworks, learning outcomes and critical success factors in order to review insights for CBE contexts. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory and Achievement Goal Theory, this review synthesized research evidence on game elements (badges, leaderboards, adaptive challenges and feedback) addressing motivation needs and supporting competency mastery. The review concluded that gamification supports CBE through competency visualization, progress indicators and sustained engagement, and identified key success factors and design principles for implementation. This research aims to contribute evidence-based gamification insights for CBE for educators and instructional designers developing innovative competency-based learning systems.
